    REMINDER

Did you know that the United Nations just declared the

    2011-2012 school year the

    "Year of the Bat?"

2nd Grade has many surprises coming up about this topic!

Check out The Story of Sticky...our ADOPTED "bat."

    at www.batworld.org/adopt-a-bat-now/

Each student received a photograph of Sticky, along with the story of how Sticky wound up at The Bat World Sanctuary in Texas.

We have a certificate hanging in our classroom gratefully acknowledging our participation in supporting The Bat World Sanctuary and Sticky.

Each student has a BAT FOLDER in their desks filled with activities involving BATS.  We've read stories about bats, created bulletin boards and charts and are looking forward to our BAT ASSEMBLY with the 8th grade coming up at the end of the month!  Second grade will be building bat houses later in the year with the 8th grade to be placed around the school property.

    Religion

Many students are preparing for the Sacrament of Reconciliation.  Please take some time to discuss with your child what we have been learning in class.  This week we are reviewing the various ways we prepare ourselves to receive God's mercy starting with an examination of conscience.  We will end the week going through the process so that the students are ready and not nervous.  It is our hope that students will come away with a feeling of celebration of God's forgiveness.

CONGRATULATIONS to my ENTIRE CLASS for learning and individually getting up and reciting the Act of Contrition prayer to your classmates.  This is the first year everyone in the class has recited the prayer successfully, so early in the year.

Each week we send home a "Sharing Faith With Your Family" page that tells everyone at home what we've done in Relgion class that week. Ask your child about it!

2nd Grade is a very important year in regard to the Sacraments. Most students will be receiving one or two Sacraments this year. Please remember to contact your parish office for details regarding the sacraments.

Each Friday the students read the Good News. The Good News contains readings and activities that are from the Gospel and readings for the upcoming Sunday Mass. The students hear Jesus' message in their own words and participate in activities that bring the message to life!

    REMINDER:
All students who will be receiving a sacrament this year should have already registered with the Religious Education Program in their Parish. If you have any questions regarding sacraments please contact Terry Roberts at school.

    Math Update

It IS about the MONEY right now in second grade!!!!  :)

Students are learning about money.  Counting coins and making change to a dollar.  To model the same amount using different coins and to problem solve using money.

A letter went home in December asking parents to send in real coins so that the students can use them while they are working.  Thank you for your support--manipulatives matter!!

Math is integrated throughout all subject areas. Second graders are encouraged to become "Problem Solvers" from day one. We challenge the students with Problem of the Day, EVERY SINGLE DAY. While we are very hands-on, we do Mental Math daily.

We also practice basic math facts with 5 minute math drills.

Many parents ask for copies of 5 Minute Math drills. For your convenience I have inserted a link to a site that offers free 5 minute math drills. Explore the site and you'll find many fun math drills for extra practice at home!

    http://www.tlsbooks.com/fiveminutemathadditiondrills0-18.pdf

Students will have math homework almost every night. Their homework will be a review of what was learned in class that day.

For help with any of the math homework visit: www.harcourtschool.com

If it prompts you for a password, type in : Andrews

This site includes "Family Involvement-tips and Activities" as well as "Show Me" math models, a glossary of math vocabulary and GAMES!!!!!

    Social Studies

Map skills are practiced throughout the year.
Students are also encouraged to hone their Geography Skills daily at our Geography Table where they can find various activities (mostly HANDS ON) to excite and inspire a love for, and knowledge of, where everything is in this great big world God made for us.

    Write to President Obama

For any student interested in writing to President Obama:

    President Barrack Obama
    1600 Pennsylvania Avenue, N.W.
    Washington, DC 20500
The Presidential Student Correspondence Fax Number is 202-456-7705.

    LOOKING BACK:

In March of 2004, my class wrote individual letters to President Bush stating their reasons for leaving the words "Under God" in the Pledge of Allegiance.

On June 14, 2004, the Supreme Court ruled to leave the words "under God" in the constitution. The ruling came on the 50th anniversary of the addition of the words "under God" to the Pledge. YAY!
